Convinced of the imminent return of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Advent Christian Conference of New Zealand exists to Encourage, Equip and Empower Advent Christian churches in New Zealand and worldwide to be obedient to His Great Commandment and Great Commission.
Russell and Noelle Carle
Russell and Noelle Carle and their family came to New Zealand in 1995 as missionaries with the Advent Christian General Conference of America. They pastored the Takanini Church of Christ (Life & Advent), the same church that Jack and Connie Jones (also Advent Christian missionaries from USA) had pastored many years ago. Russell and Noelle returned to the USA in 1999.
David and Tarnya Burge
In 1998 David and Tarnya Burge and their growing family joined the Carle family and David began working with Russell as an Associate Pastor at Takanini Church of Christ and as a church planter. When Russell and Noelle returned to the USA David pastored the church until he was diagnosed with leukemia in 2009. He died in July 2010. Tarnya continues her involvement with many ministries of the now renamed Takanini Community Church where she is a member of the Leadership Team, and as Web Manager for ACCoNZ and ACMissioNZ.
Jefferson and Penny Vann
The leadership of the New Zealand Conference sought assistance from the Advent General Christian Conference in the United States and requested that Jeff and Penny Vann, who had recently returned home after serving for 13 years at Oro Bible College in the Philippines, be released to come and help them during David’s illness. ACGC graciously agreed, as did Jeff and Penny, and they served as “pastors-at large,” during 2010, assisting several churches and the Advent Christian Conference New Zealand. They returned to the USA in early 2011. In early 2015, with the support of the Piedmont Advent Christian Conference in North Carolina, ACGC seconded Jeff and Penny to return to New Zealand to assist ACCoNZ with development of leadership and long term sustainability and ministry growth. They continue to fulfil their duties and responsibilities as Asia Pacific Area Directors and Global Training Initiative organisers for ACGC’s World Outreach Department, and are members and Elders of the Takanini Community Church.
Advent Christian Conference in New Zealand
The Advent Christian Conference in New Zealand was established in 1998.
ACMissioNZ was adopted as the official channel for mission support among ACCONZ churches.
Prayer And Fellowship
Every ministry needs prayer support. We were thrilled that a Prayer Fellowship group started in West Auckland in May of 2000 at the home of Rob & Patricia Carr. This group met to pray specifically for the needs of ACCoNZ people, churches and ministries. We coveted this prayer support and realised that we must constantly bring each and every care before our God who answers prayer. The group now meets on or about the second Friday of each month and rotates to meet in Takanini, Thames and Hamilton – our ministry locations. This gives the opportunity for fellowship as well as time for prayer. See our Associated Events Calendars for details.
Partnership with Thames
In 1999 David and associate worker Garry Schäche began travelling down to Thames every second week to assist with running a LIFE Group in association with the Thames Church of Christ. This group was designed to teach and equip the church folk for ‘lifestyle evangelism’ and to conduct Bible study. The group was advertised in the local community and special events were held at the church. The group began to grow and it became a great time of fellowship.
In 2008 Gavin and Alison McIntosh (pictured) undertook the pastoral work at Thames, now named the Parawai Church of Christ. This reduced the workload for David and Garry, but they and other ACCoNZ members have continued to be closely involved with the Thames folk.
Partnership with Hamilton
In 2016 Hamilton Church of Christ (Life & Advent) elected to join the ACCoNZ family. Hamilton Church has always been a ‘Sister Church’, being historically linked through the former Churches of Christ (Life & Advent) denomination, and so their decision was both a delight and an encouragement given that all our member churches are small and already ‘Family’ in a sense. We had enjoyed mutual fellowship over the years, supported each other’s special events, and David Burge had done some teaching and preaching at Hamilton over the years.
ACCONZ has 3 member churches and 1 associated independent ministry:
